    Shame, Guilt and Society\u27s Conception of Sex

    There is a dominant conception of sex in American society that has profound effects on our sexual lives. Often this can be a negative influence because our society’s conception is distorted. My thesis considers how this skewed view on sex and sexuality results in the presence of shame and guilt in our sexual lives. I first define society’s conception of sex and present it visually through fashion advertising. Each of the pornographic elements (objectification, submission, hierarchy and violence) utilized in advertising are explained. The advertisements are meant to provide a visual portrayal of society’s conception of sex, which is relevant to the concept of the gaze; an important aspect of shame. Second, I provide a philosophical account of shame and guilt. I illustrate how our society’s conception of sex can instigate these emotions into our sexual lives even though they are often unfounded. Finally, I attempt to resolve the “invalid shame” and “baseless guilt” we experience in our sexual lives through the notion of “sexual self-respect,” which is a variant of the philosophical concept of self-respect. As individuals we have some influence in diminishing the “invalid shame” and “baseless guilt” we experience in our sexual lives. However, society has a responsibility to formulate a conception of sex that is more conducive to our actual lived sexual experiences. Therefore, the solution resides in the give and take relationships between the individual and society, between self-respect and respect and between society and the media. I present these changes in society’s conception of sex as the possibility of seeing advertising that utilizes erotic elements rather than pornographic elements, and the use of models that more accurately portray us as sexual beings

    From Predicting Solar Activity to Forecasting Space Weather: Practical Examples of Research-to-Operations and Operations-to-Research

    The successful transition of research to operations (R2O) and operations to research (O2R) requires, above all, interaction between the two communities. We explore the role that close interaction and ongoing communication played in the successful fielding of three separate developments: an observation platform, a numerical model, and a visualization and specification tool. Additionally, we will examine how these three pieces came together to revolutionize interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) arrival forecasts. A discussion of the importance of education and training in ensuring a positive outcome from R2O activity follows. We describe efforts by the meteorological community to make research results more accessible to forecasters and the applicability of these efforts to the transfer of space-weather research.We end with a forecaster "wish list" for R2O transitions.     U.S. competitors pursuing meaningful revision or rejection of the current U.S.-led status quo are employing a host of hybrid methods to advance and secure interests contrary to those of the United States. These challengers employ unique combinations of influence, intimidation, coercion, and aggression to incrementally crowd out effective resistance, establish local or regional advantage, and manipulate risk perceptions in their favor. So far, the United States has not come up with a coherent countervailing approach. It is in this “gray zone”—the awkward and uncomfortable space between traditional conceptions of war and peace—where the United States and its defense enterprise face systemic challenges to U.S. position and authority.     Estimating the True Prevalence of\u3ci\u3e Mycobacterium bovis \u3c/i\u3ein Hunter-Harvested White-Tailed Deer in Michigan

    Apparent prevalence, although useful as a consistent index, may underestimate the true prevalence of disease. In Michigan, the ability to estimate the true prevalence of bovine tuberculosis (TB; caused by Mycobacterium bovis) in free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) will become increasingly important to accurately assess progress towards eradication. Our objectives were threefold: to estimate the true prevalence of M. bovis in free-ranging deer in Michigan, to evaluate the effectiveness of existing TB surveillance methods, and to indirectly assess whether TB epidemiologic data from captive cervid herds can be meaningfully extrapolated to free-ranging populations. The study population consisted of all free-ranging deer submitted for TB testing in 2001 from six townships in northeastern Lower Michigan. Tissue samples of tonsil and cranial lymph nodes were collected bilaterally from all deer eligible for the study that did not have gross lesions suggestive of TB (n=701). Samples were subjected to histopathologic, acid-fast (AF) staining, mycobacterial culture, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. Seven deer cultured positive for M. bovis that would not have been detected by current surveillance, yielding apparent and true prevalence estimates (95% confidence limits) of 2.7% (1.6, 3.8) and 3.6% (2.3, 4.9), respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of the current surveillance protocol were 75, 100, 100, and 99%, respectively. Histologic lesions were present only in tonsils, and ranged from simple necrosis to caseation, suppuration, and granuloma formation. Acid-fast staining and PCR detected M. bovis in only one of the seven culture-positive deer. Our study provides the first estimate of the true prevalence of M. bovis in Michigan’s free-ranging deer population and suggests modest underestimation of that prevalence by current surveillance. This study also suggests that caution is warranted when extrapolating epidemiologic data on TB in captive cervids to free-ranging populations and confirms the pivotal role of the tonsil in early infections

    Evolution by flight and fight: diverse mechanisms of adaptation by actively motile microbes

    Evolutionary adaptation can be achieved by mechanisms accessible to all organisms, including faster growth and interference competition, but self-generated motility offers additional possibilities. We tested whether 55 populations of the bacterium Myxococcus xanthus that underwent selection for increased fitness at the leading edge of swarming colonies adapted by swarming faster toward unused resources or by other means. Populations adapted greatly but diversified markedly in both swarming phenotypes and apparent mechanisms of adaptation. Intriguingly, although many adapted populations swarm intrinsically faster than their ancestors, numerous others do not. Some populations evolved interference competition toward their ancestors, whereas others gained the ability to facultatively increase swarming rate specifically upon direct interaction with ancestral competitors. Our results both highlight the diverse range of mechanisms by which actively motile organisms can adapt evolutionarily and help to explain the high levels of swarming-phenotype diversity found in local soil populations of M. xanthus
